Official Home Energy Score

Understand your home's energy use, uncover savings opportunities, and make informed decisions with confidence.

What is a Home Energy Score?

A Home Energy Score is a standardized asset rating from the U.S. Department of Energy that measures a home’s energy efficiency on a simple 1–10 scale. It reflects the home’s physical characteristics and equipment—not occupant behavior—and shows both the home’s current efficiency and its potential score after recommended upgrades. The score and report are generated using DOE’s Home Energy Scoring Tool, developed with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Serving Portland, Salem, Bend, and Willamette Valley areas, I collect standardized home data and process it through the U.S. Department of Energy’s Home Energy Scoring Tool to produce accurate, compliant ratings for real estate listings, home sales, home buyers, upgrade planning, and environmentally conscious homeowners who want a clear understanding of their home’s energy performance.

What’s Included in the Score Report

1. The 1–10 Home Energy Score

A simple, nationally standardized rating showing how efficiently your home uses energy compared to similar homes. This score is based on the home’s estimated annual energy use, normalized for climate and size.

2. Home Facts & Energy Use Breakdown

This section includes the data collected during the assessment and the modeled energy use for the home’s major systems. DOE lists this as:

  • Home characteristics (insulation, windows, HVAC, water heating, etc.)

  • Estimated annual energy use

  • Modeled performance based on standardized assumptions

Carbon footprint description as DOE’s modeled energy use can be expressed in:

  • Annual energy consumption

  • Estimated utility cost

  • Estimated carbon emissions (derived from DOE source‑energy factors)

3. Upgrade Recommendations

The report identifies cost‑effective improvements such as insulation upgrades, air sealing, HVAC improvements, or water‑heating efficiency measures. Recommendations are generated automatically by the DOE scoring tool based on the home’s data inputs.

What’s Included In the Assessment

  • Full walk‑through of the home

  • Measurement of floor area, layout, and conditioned spaces

  • Inspection of heating, cooling, water heating, and ventilation systems

  • Evaluation of insulation levels, window types, and building shell characteristics

  • Documentation of approximately 40 standardized data points required by the U.S. Department of Energy

  • Entry of collected data into the DOE Home Energy Scoring Tool (developed with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)

  • Official DOE‑generated Home Energy Score report

  • Upgrade recommendations and estimated savings

  • Submission of the completed score to the Green Building Registry for official publication and public access
